The Truth About “Insider Trading” in Education.

Most Radical Readers know that I read a ton about just what the core work of collaborative teams in professional learning communities should look like in action.

Currently, I’m working through Yes We Can: General and Special Educators Collaborating in a Professional Learning Community by my close friends Heather Friziellie, Julie Schmidt and Jeanne Spiller. Those ladies are doing some of the most remarkable work in the nation when it comes to moving special education students forward in their schools and districts. They inspire me.

And more importantly, today they challenged me.

Check out this quote:

It’s TRUE, isn’t it.

We DO engage in insider trading, pulling whatever strings we need to pull to get our own children into the classes of the best teacher that we can find.

If THAT’s not evidence of the importance of facilitating meaningful collaborative experiences between the teachers in a schoolhouse, I don’t know what is.

The fact of the matter is that NO CHILD should be “stuck” with a teacher that struggles to meet their needs — and if we commit ourselves to the notion that collaboration can build the confidence and capacity of every teacher, that’s a sad reality of schools that we can put to rest once and for all.
